MurmStack vs BuiltWith

One is a free extension that measures the page in front of you. The other is a data business selling technology lookups, histories and lead lists.

Updated 26 July 2026 · written by MurmTools, who make MurmStack

Stated plainly: we make MurmStack. BuiltWith is a serious product with a large historical dataset MurmStack has no equivalent of. These two tools barely overlap.

Short answer

Use BuiltWith when you need data about many sites — who uses what, since when, exported. Use MurmStack when you need to know what one page just did — how many companies it contacted, and how early.

Where BuiltWith is genuinely better

  • History. BuiltWith can tell you what a site used two years ago. MurmStack only sees the page you are on, now.
  • Scale. “Every store running this app” is a BuiltWith query. MurmStack has no backend and cannot answer it.
  • Sales research. Technology-based lead lists are BuiltWith’s business.

Where MurmStack does something else

A crawl-based inventory cannot tell you when something loaded, because it is not watching a real load in a real browser. MurmStack is, so it reports:

  • Distinct companies contacted, merged to the parent — Google’s several domains count once.
  • How many were contacted before a consent tool could be answered, with the exact millisecond of first contact.
  • Which of those companies are in the business of tracking people.
  • The stack, with the global or asset that proved each line.

Questions

Is there a free alternative to BuiltWith?

For one site at a time, yes — BuiltWith’s own single-domain lookup is free, and free extensions including MurmStack and Wappalyzer read a page directly. Bulk data, history and CSV export are what the paid plans sell.

How much does BuiltWith cost?

Published plans checked in July 2026 run from about $295/month to roughly $995/month, with free single-domain lookups on their site. Check builtwith.com for current pricing.

Can BuiltWith tell me which trackers fire before consent?

No — it reports which technologies a site uses, from its own crawl, not the timing of a live load.

Does MurmStack have historical data?

No. It measures the page in front of you at the moment you click, and keeps no archive.
